Claudia May Hawkins

January 5, 1940-August 6, 2021

Claudia was born on January 3, 1940, to Claude (Bushy) Beyers and Florence Anna (Harrell) Beyers in Bedford, IN. She married Vernon Dale Hawkins on September 7, 1968, in Brownstown IN.

He precedes her in death on August 6, 2007.

Claudia graduated from Heltonville High School in 1958 and Anderson College (now university) in 1963, earning a BA degree in Sociology and Psychology. She put herself through college by working in the university’s cafeteria and maintenance depts. and in catering and retail sales.

During her career, she worked for the State of Indiana’s Offices of Welfare and Unemployment, YWCA, retail sales, catering, waitress, factory worker, North Lawrence Community Schools, and was manager of a health food kiosk in the Bedford mall.

She is survived by one son Brad Hawkins, Bedford IN; one daughter Debbie Hawkins, Africa; grandchildren Isaac Hawkins (Sydney) Bedford IN, Elizabeth Fowler (Josh) Mitchell IN, Rebekah Hawkins, Bedford IN, and Chloe Grissom (Alex) Bedford IN; one great-grandson Samuel Fowler; one brother Fred and wife Jan Beyers, Owosso MI; Sister-in-law Luella Potts, Bedford IN; and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters Maude Eva Hawkins (Robert) and Annabelle Chasteen (Earl); brother-in-law Arthur Potts; sister-in-law Pansy Foremen (Wayne). Shadow, her faithful dog in life, preceded her in death. Now they will rest peacefully together with Claudia’s beloved husband Vernon. 

Claudia attended Valley Mission Church of the Nazarene. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE).

A graveside funeral at Cresthaven Memory Gardens is scheduled on Sept 21 at 11:00 a.m.; Rev. Roland Holtsclaw officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be directed to White River Humane Society, Bedford, IN or Anderson University, Anderson, IN. Cresthaven Funeral Home is entrusted with her care.
