Two transported to the hospital after an accident on State Road 37

BEDFORD – A Mitchell woman crashed her vehicle Wednesday after she became distracted while talking on her cell phone.

A Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputy responded to the accident scene on State Road 37 near Fifth Street at 3:30 p.m.

According to a police report, 37-year-old Falayna Hensell was on her cell phone while traveling south on State Road 37 at Salt Creek bridge when she became distracted while on the phone and crashed her 2004 Chevrolet Impala into the end of the guardrail.

Hensell was trapped inside her vehicle. Bedford Fire Department firefighters freed Hensell from the wreckage.

Her passenger, 6-year-old Luna Hensell, was not trapped inside the vehicle. She had no visible injuries.

Hensell complained of knee and leg pain. Both were transported by ambulance to IU Health Hospital for treatment and medical evaluation.

A witness at the scene told police they believed Hensell had run off the road to intentionally attempt to pass his vehicle on the left shoulder. A second witness gave a similar statement to the police.
