New York Street closure and traffic pattern shift to begin this week

MARION CO. –The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announced today the full closure of New York Street under I-65/I-70 in downtown Indianapolis. During this closure, traffic patterns on local streets in the area will also shift. 

Beginning on or after Sunday, July 25, New York Street between East Street and Pine Street will be closed through August 4, weather permitting. All eastbound vehicular traffic wishing to continue on New York Street will be directed south onto Ohio Street. Motorists wishing to travel northbound can use New York Street to access College Avenue. All pedestrian traffic will be redirected to Vermont Street.

Also, beginning on July 23, local access traffic patterns on Davidson Street will shift. To prep for this shift, Davidson Street from Michigan to New York streets will close on Thursday, July 22 from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. on Friday for crews to implement the traffic pattern change.

Local access to residents and businesses between East Street and Davidson Street will be maintained. During the closure of New York Street, local street parking will be temporarily restricted on Davidson Street.  Traffic flow in the area will be monitored throughout the duration of the closure.

Additionally, I-65 southbound from mile marker 112.9 to mile marker 112.4, will experience a nightly closure tonight for bridge work on I-65 southbound over Alabama Street and College Avenue. The nightly closure will go into effect at 7 p.m., and the roadway will reopen at a.m. on July 22. During this closure, the southbound left lane and shoulder will be closed to vehicular traffic.

Access to downtown Indianapolis will be maintained via:

  • I-70 westbound exit ramp to Michigan or Ohio St.
  • Pine St. entrance ramp to I-70 eastbound from Ohio St. and Michigan St.
  • I-65 northbound/I-70 eastbound exit ramp to Washington St.
  • I-65 northbound and southbound to Martin Luther King. Jr./West St.
  • I-65 southbound to Meridian St.
  • All existing ramps on I-70 west of the South Split
