Update: Horse and 4-H member fall during horse show at the Lawrence County 4-H Fair

BEDFORD – A child was injured at the Horse Show Arena Monday night approximately at 7:54 p.m., at the Lawrence County 4-H Fairgrounds.

911 dispatch received a report that a horse fell on a small child. However, after further video review this was not the case.

A young 4-H member was showing in her contesting class. During the showing of the contesting class, Pole Bending, a small mishap occurred. Pole Bending is a timed event that features a horse and one mounted rider, running a weaving or serpentine path around six poles arranged in a line. During this event, the 4-H female member fell from her horse as the horse also fell. From a distance, it appeared that the horse fell on the young girl. However, after viewing video footage, as the horse fell it rolled on it’s side and nearly missed the young 4-H member.

Emergency personnel from IU Health Ambulance, Seals Ambulance, and Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to the incident.

A medical helicopter was requested immediately to the scene, however, the helicopter was not needed and the child was transported to a local hospital.

WBIW has no other information available regarding the seriousness of the injury.
