UAW 933’s 80th anniversary to benefit Sheriffs’ Youth Ranch

INDIANAPOLIS – Members and leaders of United Auto Workers Local 933 will mark their 80th anniversary on Aug. 28 with a daylong family celebration benefitting the not-for-profit Indiana Sheriffs’ Youth Ranch for future law enforcement officers, at-risk kids, young witnesses, and victims of crime. “UAW 933 was chartered in September of 1941, said Gary Holmes, local president. “Since then, our brothers and sisters have been manufacturing good, quality products – as well producing hardworking families, neighborhoods, and communities across Central Indiana.”

Holmes said members chose to use their eight decades’ anniversary as a time to leave yet another lasting mark on Indianapolis and Indiana. With the help of Allison Transmission, Rolls Royce, Ryder Integrated Logistics, ABM, and Ford Indpls. HVC–where members work diligently each day—Local 933 is steering proceeds from the event’s food, t-shirt, and raffle ticket sales toward the construction of a UAW Youth Cabin at the 62-acre youth training retreat. “When complete, the UAW youth cabin will forever house up to students and two adult chaperones during overnights, weekend retreats, and weeklong camps. While at ISYR, teens can swim, fish, canoe, kayak, shoot archery, hike, handle docile K-9s, fly drones and learn to safely ride ATVs,” said former Marion County Sheriff John Layton, ISYR founder and president. “They can also learn about personal safety, substance abuse, cybersecurity, bullying, violence, and other unfortunate issues facing today’s youth.”

UAW 933 active and retiree members and their families will gather at their remodeled union hall, 2320 S. Tibbs Ave., from 12 to 6 p.m. to enjoy live bands, professional wrestling, rides, games, raffles, giveaways, and a low-cost menu of fried chicken, adult, and non-alcoholic beverages, Holmes said. Adults may stay until 9 p.m., he added. For more information on the event, Holmes said to contact UAW Local 933. To donate to the UAW Youth Cabin, he suggested calling ISYR at 317-460-4242, emailing the executive director at ScottMinier@yahoo.com or sending tax-deductible contributions to UAW Youth Cabin, c/o Indiana Sheriffs’ Youth Ranch, 5325 N.
