Paoli man arrested after police find drugs in his vehicle

BEDFORD – A Paoli man was arrested on drug charges after a Bedford Police officer stopped his vehicle Tuesday morning.

James Day

James Day, 34, is faces charges of possession of meth, unlawful possession of a syringe, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Day was stopped after he failed to use a turn signal while turning from 16th Street onto James Avenue. The vehicle pulled into the Crane Credit Union parking lot.

As the officer approached the vehicle they found Day passed out in the vehicle. There was a knife under Day’s right hand.

The officer called for backup. When the other officers arrived Day still appeared to be passed out in the vehicle.

Officers opened the driver’s door and removed the knife from Day’s lap and woke Day.

He was asked to step out of the vehicle and was checked for other weapons.

Day then became confrontational and requested a ticket for the infraction so he could leave.

Officers asked if there was anything illegal in the vehicle. Day denied permission for officers to search his vehicle since he was only stopped for an infraction.

A Lawrence County canine was requested to the scene and alerted officers to possible drugs in the vehicle.

Day then asked permission to grab his beverage and cigarettes from the vehicle which officers allowed.

While doing that, officers noticed Day also grabbed a green container that was hanging from the rear view mirror and wrapped it up in a yellow rag.

The officers told Day to leave it in the vehicle.

During a search of the vehicle officers found the green container contained a baggie of crystal meth, a spoon with meth residue. Officers also located a clear baggie inside of a peanut can that contained marijuana and a metal grinder.

Inside Day’s cigarette pack officers found a burnt marijuana cigarette.

Day was arrested without incident.
