Elizabeth Marie “Liz” (Doss) Smith

September 9, 1964 – April 25, 2021

Elizabeth Marie “Liz” Doss (Smith), 56, of Bedford, passed away at 10:45 pm on Sunday, April 25, 2021, at Garden Villa. 

Born September 9, 1964, in Chicago, IL, she was the daughter of William Gilliam and Eliza Bailey. She was the sixth of thirteen children. She confessed to Christ at an early age and joined the Second Baptist Church in Bedford, IN. Liz attended several elementary schools and went to Calumet High School. She didn’t have much of a youth. She had to learn motherhood at the age of 15. She tried her best, it wasn’t easy for her. Her first job was at Church’s Chicken and later worked at Nate’s Meat Market. She loved working at her family’s restaurant, Chuck’s Soul Food where she did her part to help do it all.

In 1983, she met Clifford Smith, and to that union was born a daughter, Chauntia Smith. In 1986 Clifford asked Liz for her hand in marriage and they were blessed to be married for 34 years. Liz enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, the summer vacations, and holiday trips to her daughter’s house (Chauntia) to watch her cook. Liz had such a beautiful soul and she didn’t play about her grandchildren.

Liz had 4 sisters, Lula Doss, Rose Mary Doss, of Chicago, IL, Linda Doss, Barbara Thomas, of Memphis, TN; 9 brothers, Richard Doss, Roger Thomas, David Thomas, of Chicago, IL, Robert Doss, Kenneth Doss, Rico Doss, Russels Doss, of Memphis, TN, Gilliam Green, Decatur, IL. Liz leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Clifford Smith; 3 sons, Johnie Doss, William McKinley, Jr., and Christopher Smith; 4 daughters, Tammie Doss, Chauntia Smith, Ciara King, and Dominique Lee; 7 grandchildren of knowing, Ra’qwon Doss, Terrion, Doss, Tiadja Oldham, Sercey Oldham, Yazmine Oldham, Jorydon Doss, and Adonis Smith; 2 sisters, Lula and Barbara; 4 brothers, Richard, Roger, David, Gilliam; her step-brother, Kenneth Green; a host of aunties and uncles, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and nephews, cousins, and friends whom will miss her very dearly.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Rosa Mary Doss, Linda Doss; brothers, Robert Doss, Russels Doss, Rico Doss, Kenneth Doss; son, Christopher Smith; grandson, Jonathan Doss; granddaughter, Jermyla Holmes. 

Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Saturday, May 8, 2021, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Donald Griffin officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the hour of service on Saturday at the mortuary.
