Remember To File Your Taxes By Monday

(INDIANAPOLIS) -The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) reminds Hoosiers of the 2019 individual tax filing deadline is Monday, April 15, 2019. The upcoming weekend allows customers time to file both electronically and through paper forms.

Paper tax returns require a postmarked date of no later than April 15, 2019, to be considered on time. Electronic filing can be submitted online any time before April 16, including through the Indiana Freefile program (INfreefile).
INfreefile offers qualified individuals with an adjusted gross income of $66,000 or less in 2018 several options for filing both their state and federal taxes for free. All vendor options and qualifications for INfreefile can be found online at www.freefile.dor.in.gov.
“With nearly 90 percent of individuals filing electronically, many Hoosiers can still wait until the last minute and get their filing in on time,” stated DOR Commissioner Adam Krupp. “Filing electronically is fast, easy and results in an error rate of just 2 percent versus 20 percent for paper filing.”
Still not going to be able to file by the deadline? File an extension with DOR or the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). If the federal extension is granted, an individual automatically has an extension with Indiana. The extension pushes the tax filing deadline back to Oct.15, 2019 for federal returns and Nov.14, 2019 for state returns.
Some military personnel is automatically granted extensions. Individuals on active military duty outside of the U.S. and Puerto Rico are automatically granted a 60-day extension period. Military personnel serving in a combat zone are granted an extension of 180 days after they leave the combat zone.
Remember if an extension is granted, it only extends the time a customer has to file, not the amount of time to pay taxes owed. Customers are still required to pay taxes owed by April 15, 2019, to avoid penalties and fees.
