Bernard “Bernie” Dean Johnson
September 28, 1935 – October 13, 2018
Bedford – Bernard “Bernie” Dean Johnson, 83, of Bedford, passed away at his residence Saturday morning.
Born September 28, 1935, in Martin County, he was the son of Audrey Johnson and Mary (Hamilton) Johnson. He married Geraldine “Jerri” Allen on August 20, 1955, and she preceded him in death on April 9, 2017. He was a Supervisor for Ingalls Limestone and Evans Limestone. Bernie was a member of the Hillcrest Christian Church where he was a Sunday school President and served as an elder and deacon. He is a fifty-year member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge #14 and the Scottish Rite of Indianapolis, and a longtime associate member of the FOP. He loved I.U. basketball and softball and played for the Oolitic Aces in the 1960’s. He enjoyed playing golf.
Survivors include two daughters, Lynn Mullis and husband Brian, and Lisa Mathews and husband Bill, both of Bedford; five grandchildren, Brad Burton of Washington, D.C., Jesse Burton, Adam Mullis and wife Christie, Scott Mathews and wife Ashley, and Jake Mathews, all of Bedford; two great-grandchildren, Jenna and Averie Mullis of Bedford; two brothers, Bill Johnson and wife Mary of Monroe County and Gerald Johnson of Fayetteville; one aunt, Viola Hill of Bedford; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded by his wife, Geradine “Jerri” Johnson; his parents; and one daughter, Kelly Ann Burton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 16th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Jamie Allen, Pastor Charlie Scott, and Pastor Mark Fugate officiating. Burial will follow in Dixon Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, October 15th at the Day & Carter Mortuary. A Masonic service will be conducted at 7:00 pm on Monday.
