Loyed Thomas Melton, 86, of Mitchell, passed away Sunday, September 2, 2018, at his residence.
Born October 18, 1931, in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, he was the son of Thomas Samuel Lee and Mary Frances (Johnson) Melton. He married Margaret VanMeter November 17, 1961, and she preceded him in death July 29, 1990.
Loyed was a farmer and had been employed at Roberts Brass. He enjoyed working on cars and trucks and loved country and bluegrass music.
Survivors include his children, Rick (Ranata) VanMeter of Bedford, Donna Diamond of Scottsburg, Mike (Sandy) VanMeter of Bedford, Ralph (Debbie) VanMeter of Bedford, Melissa Overstreet of Bedford, Elizabeth (Ray) Parks of Scottsburg, Marla Melton Salazar of Mitchell, William (Renee) Shoopman of Mitchell; 22 grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; brother, William Melton of Mount Washington, Kentucky
His parents; wife; son, Loyed Thomas Melton, Jr.; son-in-law, Douglas Overstreet; granddaughter, Madison Bickers; and siblings, Mary Pittman, Delia Perkins, and Bill Melton, preceded him in death.
Graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, September 6, at Mitchell Cemetery with Rev. Johnnie Herald officiating.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. Thursday at Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center.

Glenda Young – Norman

Glenda Young, 78, of Norman, died at 10:02 a.m. on Sunday, September 2, 2018 at Monroe Hospital.
Born November 3, 1939 in Bedford, she was the daughter of W. Glenn Butler and Lahoma F. (Hildum) Butler. She married Kenneth Ray Young on June 20, 1958 and he preceded her in death on January 13, 2016. She retired from Home Interiors and as a teacher’s aide in special education at Bedford Middle School. She was a member of the Oolitic Pentecostal Church.
Survivors include three sons, Berry Young, Marty Young and his wife Sandy, David Young, all of Norman; six grandchildren, Jennifer Baum and her husband Chad, Marty Glenn Young Jr. and his wife Abbigail, Ryan Young and his wife Amber, Kenneth Young, Devon Young, Josie Young; five great-grandchildren, Coleton, Claire, Cosbee, Oakley, and Shade; two sisters, Bonnie Parkes and her husband Larry, Rita Anderson and her husband Jim,
both of Bedford.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Kenneth, and one sister, Shirley Yvonne Flynn.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, September 6th at the Oolitic Pentecostal Church with Bro. Marty Speer officiating. Burial will follow in the Guthrie Creek Primitive Baptist Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 pm until 8 pm on Wednesday, September 5th at the Day & Carter Mortuary, and on Thursday from 11 am until the hour of service at the Oolitic Pentecostal Church.

Lois Marie Root – Orleans

Lois Marie Root, 95, passed away Sunday, September 2, 2018, at Paoli Health and Community.
Born June 22, 1923, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Jesse and Celia (Routh) Melvin. She married Eugene Slaughter and he preceded her in death March 17, 1982. Her second husband, Perry Kendall, preceded her in death March 5, 1997, and her third husband, Lee Root, preceded her in death October 8, 2011.
Lois had been employed at Trav-Ler Radio Corporation. She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1942 and was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and attended Orleans First Baptist Church. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and making dresses for her granddaughters. Lois was a great baker and loved gardening and yard work. She enjoyed spending time with family and riding in Kara Jean’s jeep to get milkshakes, out to eat, shopping, and getting manicures and pedicures.
Survivors include her children, Lana (Danny) Hudelson of Orleans, Brent (Karen) Slaughter of Orleans, Adrian (Angie) Slaughter of Mitchell; stepdaughter, Virginia (Ron) Boshears of Bloomington; grandchildren, Brett (Kim) Hudelson, Darren Hudelson, Trent Slaughter, Kara, Jean Slaughter, Jason (Lesley) Slaughter, Jodie (Kyle) Endris, Lindsay (Nick) Doub; 11 great grandchildren; 5 step great grandchildren; 2 great great grandsons and one due in March of 2019; brother in law, Rex Morris of Mitchell; sister in law, Darlene Dalton of Mitchell; niece, Jan Dalton of Mitchell; several nieces and nephews
Her parents; husbands; grandson, Robert Eugene Slaughter; one great grandchild; and siblings, Ruth Evelyn Isom, Mary Lou Morris, Edith Deweese, Elva Russell, Lorena Elrod, Noble Melvin, Roscoe Melvin and Willard Melvin, preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 6, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Pastor Greg Matthew officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday and from 9:30 a.m. until the service on Thursday at the funeral home.
