Phillip Allen – Bedford
Phillip Allen, 63, of Bedford, died Thursday, April 17, 2014 at I.U. Health Bloomington Hospice House.

Dean F. Kirk – Mitchell
Dean F. Kirk, 80, passed away at 5:05 a.m. Friday, April 18, 2014, at Indiana University Health Hospice House in Bloomington.

Mary E. Stewart – Oolitic
Mary E. Stewart, 91, of Oolitic, passed away Thursday morning at Garden Villa.
Born on December 24, 1922, she was the daughter of David H. and Inez (Lewis) Miller. She married Charles R. Stewart on September 20, 1941 and he preceded her in death on August 8, 2000. She retired as a cook from Oolitic Schools.
Survivors include her son, Danny Stewart and wife Nancy, of Oolitic, two daughters, Diana Flynn and husband Monet Dewayne, of Springville and Donna Chinn, of Garrettsville, Ohio; nine grandchildren; twenty-three great-grand children and five great great-grand children.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Charles; twin sister Marie Helen Bingham; sister Hilda Rose Mitchell; sister Dorothy Gayle Miller, in infancy.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 21, 2014 at Grace Baptist Church in Springville with Bob Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Beech Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the hour of service at the church.

Marcella S. Russell – Shoals
Marcella S. Russell, 74, of Shoals, passed away Thursday at 5:55 a.m. at IU Health Hospice House in Bloomington.
She was born on September 20, 1939 in Martin County to Donald Freeman and Evelyn (Richardson) Stewart. She married Donald W. Tedrow and he passed away in 2002. Marcella retired from RCA in Bloomington.
She is survived by her companion, Lester Gammon, of Shoals; two sons, William K. Tedrow, of Bedford and Warren B. Tedrow, of Sioux Falls, SD., two grandsons, William Tedrow and Robert Tedrow, both of Mitchell; five great grand-children; two brothers, Donald Richard Stewart of Jasper and Terry Lee Stewart of Otwell; two sisters, Mary Skobel, of Benton, IL and Carolyn Stewart, of Otwell.
She was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter Trisha Tedrow and one sister Shelia.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Queen-Lee Funeral Home in Shoals. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery in Shoal.

Melvin Norman “Jiggs” Backherms – Mitchell
Melvin Norman “Jiggs” Backherms, 76, of Mitchell, passed away at 10:55 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.
Born March 7, 1938, in Corydon, he was the son of Laurel and Ada Mae (Crone) Backherms. He married Nita Kay Knable April 23, 1960.
He was a project engineer for the Indiana Department of Transportation and retired with 44 years of service. Melvin graduated from Corydon High School in 1957. Chief enjoyed watching all sports, going fishing; taking drives in the country, and being with his family. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Nita Kay Backherms, Mitchell; children, Michael Edward (Susan) Backherms, Mitchell, Cindy Ann Farmer, Orleans, Suzie Marie (Andy) Sehr, Bedford; granddaughters, Nicole Backherms and Evie Sehr; brothers, Dennis (Kathy) Backherms, Corydon Laurel (Marcella) Backherms, Jr., Salem; several nieces and nephews
His parents and siblings, Shirley Backherms and Lonnie Backherms, preceded him in death.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 19, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Father Rick Eldred and Deacon Dave Reising officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Nancy Jean Cogwell – Mitchell
Nancy Jean Cogwell, 74, of Mitchell, passed away at 6:25 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford.
Born February 1, 1940, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Gene Westerfield and Thelma (Cooper) Connerley. She married Ronald Eugene Cogwell July 25, 1958. Nancy had been employed at the First National Bank and was owner of Ma Nancy Antique Shop. She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1958 and was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Surviviors include her husband, Ronald Cogwell, Mitchell; son, John (Sharon) Cogwell, Mitchell; grandchildren, Jonathan (Alyssa) Cogwell; Stephanie Cogwell; great grandson, Brayden Cogwell.
Her parents preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 21, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Reverend Reggie Clark officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and from 9:30 a.m. until the service on Monday at the funeral home.
