Hoosiers Encouraged To Install Smoke Alarms
(UNDATED) - The US Fire Administrator is encouraging Hoosiers to install and maintain smoke alarms in their homes as a way to prevent deaths.
The US Fire Administration tracks fatal home fires every day and reports 535 Indiana residents are included in those statistics between 2000 and 2006.
That figure places Indiana as 15th highest in the nation.
US Fire Administrator Kelvin Cochran says when both smoke alarms and fire sprinklers are present in a home, the risk of dying in a fire is reduced by 82%, when compared to a residence without either.
That's why his agency is launching the "install, inspect, protect" campaign.
He says smoke alarms range in price from $5 to $20, but most fire departments will come to your home and install detectors for free.
