H1N1 Found In Commercial Swine

(UNDATED) - The H1N1 flu virus has been found for the first time in a commercial swine herd.

Several pigs tested positive for the virus in Minnesota in September, but they were not part of a commercial herd.

The US Department of Agriculture says the herd is located in Indiana, but both the pigs and their caretaker have fully recovered from the virus.

The USDA says it is safe to eat pork from pigs that recover from H1N1 because the virus does not reside in the animal's muscle tissue.

The USDA is not identifying the location or size of the herd.

The Hoosier State is the nation's fifth largest pork producer.

The pork industry has taken quite a hit lately due to the fear that pigs spread the H1N1 virus to humans.
