Special Olympics Begin Friday In Terre Haute
(UNDATED) - This week marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of Special Olympics Indiana.
The Special Olympics annual summer games begin Friday evening on the ISU campus in Terre Haute.
For three days, over 2,700 special Olympians will compete in seven sports ranging from aquatics to volleyball.
IU Men's Basketball Coach Tom Crean is the honorary chairman of this year's Olympics.
Amanda Personett with Special Olympics Indiana says there will be some special activities for the athletes and volunteers in honor of the 40th anniversary.
One activity is a ballroom dancing demonstration in the Hulman Union on Saturday.
Special Olympics Indiana is the only program in the world offering the sport to their athletes.
Personett says this year's opening and closing ceremonies will be unique in honor of the event's 40th anniversary in Indiana.
