Expect More Road Construction This Summer

(UNDATED) - Expect to see a lot of orange cones and barrels on the highways this summer.

With major moves and federal economic stimulus funds boosting the total, Indiana's investment in highway improvement projects is rising from last year's $1.1 billion to $2 billion this year.

Indiana Department of Transportation Spokeswoman Ashley Hungate says the DOT schedules work to cause as little disruption as possible, but she says it's "a delicate balance" between allowing access to the roadways and finished needed projects as quickly as possible.

"The more access we allow", she says, "the longer it takes to get these projects done."

With so much work being done, there'll be a lot of highway workers out in the open.

For safety's sake, Hungate urges drivers to "stay alert, be aware of your surroundings" and "avoid the three C's, cell phones, coffee and c.d.'s."

Some of the high-profile projects in the Indianapolis area this summer include I-465 on the west side, from Sam Jones Expressway to I-74, I-69 on the northeast side and US 40, East Washington Street, from I-465 to Cumberland.
