(LOUISVILLE, KY) - Prosecutors say Katie McCoy killed her baby and then threw it in the trash to hide the evidence.

The defense argues the woman thought her baby was still-born.

Opening statements were made in the trial of the Indiana woman and former Kentucky college student accused of murdering her newborn daughter.

McCoy was 19-years-old when she gave birth inside her dorm room at Bellarmine University in Louisville in 2007.

Prosecutor Erin White described to the jury how McCoy placed the newborn in three trash bags and a duffel bag after the birth.

Defense Attorney Alex Dathorne told the jury that McCoy tried to keep her pregnancy a secret because she didn't want to disappoint her family.

The attorney says McCoy through her baby was still-born and she panicked.
