Closing Phases Implemented At VX Chemical Depot
(NEWPORT) - The closure phase is currently ongoing at the Newport chemical depot in Vermillion County.
Officials are working to prepare approximately 100 drums that were accumulated during the destruction of the VX nerve stockpile which occurred from 2005 to August 2008.
Officials at Newport have asked the state for a permit to operate a big, hot air dryer that will evaporate any liquids that might remain on things such as valves or personal safety suits. The process should be completed within three months.
In all, around 2.5 million pounds of VX from the Newport facility was destroyed. The agent is considered the most toxic nerve agent ever made. It was produced at the facility from 1961 until 1968.
