Deer Reductions A Success, Says DNR
(UNDATED) - The first round of controlled deer reductions is over.
Indiana hunters harvested 1,124 deer at 17 participating state parks last Monday and Tuesday. The Department of Natural Resources uses the hunts in an attempt to control swelling populations of white-tailed deer.
Mike Mycroft, Natural Resource Coordinator for the DNR division of state parks and reservoirs, says overall, the hunts went really well. He says the results vary widely from park to park.
Before the event, Mycroft asked hunters not to focus on bagging trophy animals. The aim of the cull, he said, is simply to lower the number of deer.
He says turnout this year was actually higher than last year. The no-show rate was 31 percent this year, compared to 47 percent last year. The second round of hunts takes place December 1-2.
