Move Over Law Protects Police Officers
(UNDATED) - Indiana’s “move over” law is designed to prevent law enforcement officers from being struck while dealing with violators along side the highway.
Motorists are required to safely change lanes away from the emergency vehicle if possible, or slow down below the posted speed limit and proceed with caution.
Emergency vehicles include: police cars, ambulances, fire trucks, tow trucks, Hoosier Helper and highway work vehicles. You should be alert when you see emergency lights and give the personnel room to do their job.
Motorists who ignore the law typically face a fine of $500. Violators causing injuries or property damage can have their driver's license suspended for up to two years.
In 1999, Indiana became the first of over 40 states to approve a "move over law".
