State Police Becoming Mindful Of Fuel Usage

(UNDATED) - Like everyone else, the Indiana State Police is being affected by soaring gasoline prices.

Sergeant Anthony Emery with the state police says troopers are more mindful about their fuel usage now. They're doing more stationary patrols and not letting the police cruiser idle for long periods of time.

The department operates on a fuel budget that is forecast a year in advance. Current gasoline prices put them over budget, but State Police Superintendent Paul Whitsell hasn't issued formal fuel conservation guidelines. Emery says that's because the troopers have taken the initiative to do it themselves.

One reason for their voluntary fuel conservation is because Indiana State Police troopers are allowed to drive their cruisers when they're off duty. Emery says many are buying a tank of gas a week out their own pockets to hopefully avoid the loss of that benefit.

Emery says regardless of fuel costs, the state police will not reduce services.
