Planners Discuss Rapid Transit In Morgan County
(MOORESVILLE) - Regional transportation planners visit Mooresville Monday night to lay out the possibilities for rapid-transit lines running to Morgan County.
The Central Indiana Regional Transportation Authority wants to bring some form of mass transit to the entire nine-county area surrounding Indianapolis.
Hamilton County is furthest along -- two commuter buses are already running, and the county hopes to start a light-rail line in as little as two years.
Executive Director Ehren Bingaman says that doesn't necessarily mean buses and trains to Morgan County. He says the goal is to make the entire region part of a mass-transit network, but says in some areas, that could mean expanding Indy's Central Indiana Commuter Services carpool-matching program, or reserving some lanes on busy roads for buses and carpool vehicles.
Bingaman says soaring gas prices have increased interest in mass transit, but says it's not the only factor. He figures the fewer cars on the road, the safer his young children are when they're outside playing.
Similar forums are planned for Thursday in Martinsville, and next week in Zionsville and Lebanon. Next month, CIRTA plans hearings in Indianapolis and Fishers on the Hamilton County light-rail proposal.
