Mother Seeks Leniency From Judge In Daughter's Death Trial

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The woman who is accused of letting her fiancee beat her daughter to death has reached a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Charity Bailey is pleading guilty to four felony neglect charges instead of murder in the death of TaJanay Bailey last November. TaJanay died after allegedly being abused by charity and her fiancee Lawrence Green.

Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi says the plea agreement with Charity Bailey is fair and he says she contributed to the little girl's death. She has agreed to testify against Green in exchange for pleading guilty to the four felony neglect charges which carry a maximum prison term of 59 years.

Brizzi says the court will wait and see if she's telling the truth in Lawrence Green's trial before sentencing her. The prosecutor says Green is the person who is ultimately responsible for TaJanay's death and will go to trial on October 20th facing life without parole.

Jennifer Cobb is with an advocacy corporation called "And Justice For All." Bailey is one of her clients.

Cobb says Bailey suffered abuse as a child and plans to write a letter to judge Tanya Walton Pratt asking for leniency in her sentencing. She says girls who are abused become women who have low self-esteem and inadvertently allow things to happen.

Cobb says society should have compassion for Charity Bailey because she really needs it.
