(UNDATED) - This is emerald ash borer awareness week. Its a multi-state effort to fight the spread of the pest.

Purdue Entomologist Jodie Ellis says firewood movement is by far the biggest problem in the spread of the emerald ash borer in Indiana. Moving firewood from any quarantined area is against both state and federal laws.

State parks and properties encourage campers to buy firewood locally and to burn it completely before leaving campsites. Seventeen counties in Indiana are quarantined by the DNR because of EAB finds.

Ellis says state park and property employees will soon be participating in a training program so they can provide up-to-date information for campers and park and property visitors.

The week coincides with Memorial Day weekend-the unofficial start of camping season in the Midwest.

State park and property officials will greet visitors with banners and informative handouts about the emerald ash borer.
