(CROWN POINT) - Prosecutors are dismissing criminal charges against a former East Chicago council candidate and his father in a shootout last year that left the candidate’s 7-year-old son dead.

Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter says the charges against 25-year-old Michael Silvas Jr. and 47-year-old Michael Silvas Sr. were dismissed because of insufficient evidence. Carter indicated charges could be refiled later.

A murder charge against the man initially accused of firing the shot that killed Angel Silvas was also dropped. Charges were also dropped against another man in the incident.

East Chicago Police believe the shootout was the result of violence between rival gangs.
