(INDIANAPOLIS) - A group of Brownsburg fifth-graders are spending the day at the Eagle Creek Salvation Army, making emergency preparedness kits for disaster victims and bundles for first responders.

Joann Remender with the Salvation Army says the "Disaster Masters" program teaches a skill that can affect their everyday lives.

The preparedness kits include blankets, pillows, and toothbrushes. The kits for first responders include gloves and socks.

Both sets of kits will go to a Salvation Army warehouse, and will be distributed in the event of floods or tornadoes in Indiana or neighboring states.

Student Carley Doty says the class sought out the program because of strong storms last summer which caught many Brownsburg families unprepared.
