(GARY) - Gary Mayor Rudy Clay is reacting to the recent indictments of his police chief Thomas Houston and two other top officers.

Houston, Deputy Chief Thomas Branson and Sergeant Thomas Decanter are accused of beating and detaining four people suspected of breaking into the chief's house last summer.

Clay says Houston will retire and the other two will be reassigned within the department. He calls all three exemplary members of the police force.

Clay is asking Gary residents to withhold judgment until the officers are tried in court. He says the Gary police department is strong and prepared to protect the city.
