(INDIANAPOLIS) - A new group is alive in Indianapolis, working to help fathers improve on their relationships with both kids and mothers.

The Circle City Fatherhood Coalition developed as a way to address the growing problem of absent fathers.

Executive Director Keith Smitherman says this is another way to attack the violence in Indianapolis at the "front end," when kids can still grow up in strong families. Smitherman says boys and girls who grow up with parents who are absent or in trouble with the law "don't see any other way" than a life of crime.

Michael Shaw is a father who is in the program and says it has already strengthened his relationship with his kids and their mothers. The coalition is getting support from an Indiana Youth Institute grant.
