Digging On Modern Sewer System Begins In Lafayette

(LAFAYETTE) - Beginning Monday, a machine the size of a city bus will begin boring a tunnel 30 feet below street level in downtown Lafayette.
The finished tunnel will be big enough to drive through, but it won't be used as a bypass under city streets. Instead it will be a massive sewer, reducing the amount of untreated sewage dumped into the Wabash River after heavy rainfalls and winter storms.
The work, expected to continue all summer, is intended to modernize an aging infrastructure, accommodate future city growth and meet federal pollution laws.
