Citizens Outcry Council's Sheriff Appointment
(CHANDLER) - A town council meeting in Southern Indiana looked more like a mob scene Monday night.
The Chandler town council voted two-to-one to hire Marlin Weisheit as the city's new police chief.
Council President Brian Lucas sided with the nearly two hundred residents who showed up at the meeting to support former Chief Ronnie Walker whom they wanted re-hired.
However, two council members defiantly motioned and seconded to install Weisheit as chief effective March 28th when current Chief Cletus Miller retires.
There was outcry from the crowd and the current police force. A petition was also presented bearing over one thousand signatures supporting Walker.
Walker was fired as police chief in 2005 because he did not move fast enough to issue citations to residents refusing to clean up their properties in a mobile home park.
Weisheit is a former Warrick County sheriff's deputy who ran unsuccessfully for sheriff in 2002 and 2006.
