Road Salt Supplies Causing Headaches Across State
(UNDATED) - Indiana cities and counties are struggling to maintain a balance with their road salt supplies.
Street and highway departments report difficulties in getting shipments from suppliers and gauging how much material to use in any given storm. The city of Kokomo lent the city of Anderson 100 tons of salt before realizing the Howard County highway department was running low.
Officials in Columbus say their supply is okay, but making sure supplies stay okay from salt vendors is a challenge. Some departments are beginning to mix more sand with their salt to stretch supplies, but say that isn't a preferred method because the sand remains when the water evaporates requiring additional clean up.
Street department officials add it has been a difficult year to plan resources because of the differing fluctuations in the forecast versus the actual weather received.
