(INDIANAPOLIS) - It seems like everyone knows someone who has been the recent victim of a car break-in.

The latest statistics from Indianapolis Metro Police show property crimes are up a whopping 41%. Sergeant Matt Mount says people need to be more cautious when shopping.

Mount says it should be common sense to lock your doors when you leave your car anywhere and to put packages in the trunk. But, Mount says people are being victimized because they leave stuff like iPods or car stereos in plain sight.

Mount says electronic locks are no longer a deterrent. He says criminals who see something in your car worth stealing will simply smash the windows.
