Long Term Plan To Remove Lead From Evansville Soil

(EVANSVILLE) - There’s a long-term plan to remove lead contaminated soil from Evansville’s Jacobsville neighborhood.

Several factories located in the neighborhood around the turn of the 20th century poured lead particles from their smokestacks which made their way into the ground. Cleanup has already taken place at 63 of the area's most contaminated sites.

Jena Sleboda is the remedial project manager for the EPA's superfund division and will oversee the long-term cleanup which is expected to begin in the spring of 2009 and last for about five years.

The cleanup of the soil will continue in the same fashion that began in the fall of 2007 with lead contaminated soils being dug up and replaced with clean soil.
