(STATEHOUSE) - Preliminary results of the new property reassessments in 20 Indiana counties show a significant increase in business property values.

Business property assessments in Marion County are up nearly $4 billion and Shelby County saw close to a $54 million increase.

Governor Mitch Daniels says the reassessment figures are a good start to property tax reform.

He maintains the disparity between the old and new assessments is proof that the state should substantially reduce the number of township assessors.

He also remains steadfast in wanting a constitutional amendment to cap property taxes.
