(INDIANAPOLIS) - If you think that slip-and-fall you took on the ice is no big deal… think again.

Health officials say this time of year generates numerous injuries related to slipping on the ice. And some injuries can lead to death if not properly addressed, especially in the elderly.

Indianapolis emergency room doctor Louis Profeta says people taking blood thinners and anti-clot medication are susceptible to hemorrhages. Large bone fractures can also lead to secondary issues such as blood clots and infection.

Profeta says prevention is the best tool to help avoid such injuries. The doctor suggests helping elderly relatives and neighbors with errands and outdoor tasks to limit activity and lessen the chance of a slippery fall.
