Hoosiers Flock To State Insurance Plan

(INDIANAPOLIS) - 4,500 people have signed up in the first week of enrollment for Indiana’s new state-sponsored health insurance plan.

About a third of those didn't wait for the official rollout of the Healthy Indiana Plan last Monday, but submitted their applications in advance.

Family and Social Services Administration Secretary Mitch Roob expects about 50,000 people to sign up in the plan's first year, a little more than a third of the program's maximum. He says enrollment should rise as word about the program spreads.

FSSA is running radio, billboard and TV ads promoting the program, and has sent letters to the parents of children enrolled in the state children's health insurance program.

It takes up to two months for FSSA to verify your eligibility and put you on the rolls. The program is available to people who earn less than double the federal poverty level, and whose employers don't offer insurance.
