(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indianapolis police plan to more than triple the number of security cameras watching for crime on streets.
There are currently 21 cameras in operation on utility poles across the state's largest city. By the end of 2008, there will be 67.
Many of the new cameras will be mounted near Lucas Oil Stadium and about 20 will be deployed in high-crime areas.
The cameras cost about $14,000 dollars each. Most of them, and the control center where police monitor the cameras, were funded by a one million dollar homeland security grant.
Another $400,000 dollars in cash seized from criminals is being used to buy other cameras and equipment.
