Hoosier Opinions Vary On Property Tax Solution

(UNDATED) - Four polls released in the last several weeks offer conflicting pictures of what Hoosiers want done about property taxes.

An Indianapolis Star poll indicated a big majority of Hoosiers willing to pay more in sales taxes in order to cough up less in property taxes. But a poll for the Indiana Chamber found supporters of any new taxes outnumbered by Hoosiers who demand spending cuts instead.

Conservative group Advance America, which wants to repeal property taxes, says its poll found a majority of Hoosiers support that position regardless of how the money is replaced.

And a poll commissioned by the State Teachers Union says people want school funding protected, even if it means no action on property taxes.

An unscientific survey in Downtown Indianapolis finds Hoosiers all over the map. Several people who live in Hamilton County, where property tax increases were less dramatic, say they don't see a need for a tax overhaul. But several people expressed cautious support for a sales-tax hike, while no one was strongly opposed.
