Watch Out For Deer On Roads, Says Biologist

(UNDATED) - It’s that time of year again when motor vehicle accidents with deer go up.

Indiana Department of Natural Resources Biologist Chad Stewart says cooler weather, the mating season, and shorter daylight hours all add up to an increase in accidents.

According to State Farm insurance claims, Indiana is number 12 in the nation for car / deer accidents. Stewart says the most common type of accident is deer running into the side of vehicles.

He says the best way to avoid an accident is not to speed in areas where there are deer crossing signs. Deer travel in herds so if you see one, look out for others.

Stewart also says you might want to steer clear of deer gimmicks like whistles and reflectors don't work.
