Real Emergency Interrupts Hospital Drill
(RICHMOND) - A drill at Richmond’s Reid Hospital went well for about an hour — until the event was interrupted by a real emergency.
A chemical leak in the basement laundry area prompted an immediate end to the drill. Hospital officials went on the PA to announce the "code green" drill was over, and issue a chemical spill alert.
About 30 Richmond High School students enlisted to play the parts of accident victims were sent back to the school by bus, and about two dozen workers in the hospital business office were evacuated. Visitors were barred from the hospital for about 45 minutes until firefighters gave the all-clear.
No one was injured in the leak, but it took more than two hours to clean up.
Hospital officials say a pipe or hose connected to a tank of cleaning chemicals appears to have sprung a leak.
