Officials Detail RCA Dome's Eventual Demise

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana Stadium and Convention Building Authority has unveiled plans for demolishing the RCA Dome to make room for the Indiana Convention Center expansion, which is expected to begin in spring/summer of 2008.

Plans call for the convention center to be removed by traditional demolition.

According to the project's construction manager, a joint venture of Shiel Sexton/Powers and Sons, the dome's existing exterior utility piping, mechanical and electrical lines will be relocated from January through May 2008.

"During the spring and summer of 2008, the dome's fabric roof will be removed and the sequential demolition will begin of the ring beam that encircles the dome at the highest level.

The demolition, which is expected to last about five months, will move from north to south so construction can begin on the three- story expansion structure in the northwest corner of the project.

The new construction is expected to begin by late summer.

The 275 million dollar convention center expansion, when finished, combined with the new Lucas Oil Stadium, will increase the amount of exhibition, meeting room and pre-function space at the two sites from 725-thousand square feet to about 1.2 million square feet.
