Man Burns Daughter With Lighter, Charged With Battery

(LAFAYETTE) - A man is facing battery charges for allegedly burning his stepdaughter with a lighter because she forgot to bring pencils home from school.

34-year-old John Tate of Chicago is also suspected of beating the 6-year-old with an extension cord, belt and hairbrush, leaving open welts on her body.

Tate was charged Friday in Tippecanoe Circuit Court with felony battery resulting in serious bodily injury and felony battery on a child.

The girl's mother, 29-year-old Sherita Hill also was charged with neglect of a dependent for failing to report the crime.
