(LOUISVILLE, KY.) - A Bellarmine University student has been arrested on a murder charge after she gave birth to a child in her dorm room.

19-year-old Kathryn McCoy of Plainfield, Indiana is also accused of tampering with evidence and concealing the birth of an infant.

According to police, Mccoy gave birth to a girl in the bathroom of her dorm room early Wednesday morning. The medical examiner says the baby was close to or at full-term and was born alive.

Police say McCoy let the baby fall into the toilet, causing her death. McCoy is accused of placing the infant in the trash down the hall. Her roommate found the newborn and called police.

Before officers arrived, McCoy alleged retrieved the body and tried to hide it in a gym bag.

McCoy is a sophomore who is a member of the Bellarmine University women's golf team. She is a native of Plainfield.
