All Of Indiana Now In "Tornado Alley"

(INDIANAPOLIS) - A new designation for Indiana. The state is now a part of the so-called “tornado alley.”

The designation doesn't mean more federal emergency dollars for the state -- it's just a climate-based designation similar to "hurricane alley."

Dan McCarthy with the National Weather Service says Indiana ranks seventh in the nation in tornado-related deaths. McCarthy says the state is in what he calls the "tornado triangle," or the area of the U.S. that is most prone to tornadic activity throughout the year.

The state's history includes some legendary monster tornadoes, including the infamous "Palm Sunday tornado," the Memorial Day tornadoes that struck Indy in 2004, and one that devastated the Evansville area in 2005.
