Motorists: Use Caution Around Farm Vehicles

(UNDATED) - Indiana farmers are putting in a generous supply of overtime hours as they continue with the fall harvest.

State police say farmers and motorists must equally share the responsibility of highway safety. Public information officer Chad Dick says many rural accidents occur because of the difference in size and speed of tractors and motor vehicles.

Whenever possible, Dick says farmers should use an escort vehicle and flashing lights when they travel on the highways.

Dick agrees that many accidents can be avoided, simply by traveling at a reduced speed.

He says motorists should take a close look when there's flashing lights because instead of a four-way hazard light, the farmer might be signaling for a turn. If the tractor pulls to the right side of the road... again, keep an eye on the operator and the turn signals, because the driver might be making a wide left turn.
