(GARY) - Gary Mayor Rudy Clay says he believes city police officers “messed up” in not searching for the bodies of two victims of a Saturday car crash.

The comments put Clay at odds with Police Chief Thomas Houston, who insists officers did nothing wrong.

Two teenagers were killed and two injured when their car crashed into a ditch. Family members of the victims say they pleaded with officers to no avail to hunt for the two teens who had been thrown from the car.

Houston says officers got conflicting information from the survivors about whether there had been anyone else in the car or not.

18-year-old Brandon Smith's father found him and Dominique Green almost immediately upon arriving hours after the wreck.

An autopsy concluded Smith and Green died instantly. Family members are skeptical.
