USS Indianapolis Memorial Opens To The Public
(INDIANAPOLIS) - The USS Indianapolis gallery at the Indiana War Memorial was permanently opened to the public Monday as part of Indianapolis Navy Week.
The 700 square foot gallery, located on the first floor of the memorial, tells the story of one of the most famous ships in the history of the United States. Officials say the gallery endeavors to tell the story of the ship's 13 year history before it was sunk by a Japanese submarine.
The gallery contains a 6 foot model of the USS Indianapolis, the original 800 pound ship's bell and artifacts from every period of the vessel's history.
Other events this week include performances by the U.S. Navy Horizon Band at various locations throughout the Indianapolis area from Wednesday through Sunday.
The week culminates with the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and Leap Frogs performing tactical demonstrations and precision freefall and parachute jumps at the Indianapolis Air Show at Mount Comfort this weekend.
