Truck Inspection Zones Check For Safety

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Truckers steered through a commercial vehicle enforcement zone Wednesday on the South Side of Indianapolis.

The inspection was a joint effort between local and state police and the Marion County Traffic Safety Partnership.

Indiana State Police Sergeant Tyler Utterback works in the commercial motor division for state police. He says the goal of the inspection is to reduce commercial vehicle involved crashes. Police were focusing on local roads. Officers pulled over dump trucks, straight trucks, and even passenger vehicles which committed a moving violation.

Inspectors checked to make sure drivers were wearing safety belts, if they had the proper driving license, and checked to make sure drivers had the proper medical certification to drive a commercial vehicle. Then inspectors looked at everything from the horn to steering. Both warnings and citations were issued for violations, but occasionally a vehicle has to be impounded.

Inspectors hope commercial vehicle drivers who don't get stopped at the enforcement zone go back to their garages and make sure that their vehicles are in compliance with set standards.
