(UNDATED) - Indiana Motor Vehicle inspectors are giving extra emphasis to the importance of properly maintained brakes this week.

National Brake Safety Week runs through Friday. State police inspectors won't conduct any more checks than usual, but will be reminding truckers that brake failure is the leading mechanical cause of truck crashes.

Cynthia Gray, District Coordinator for the Vigo County Scale Facility on I-70, says brakes receive heavy use on any long-haul drive, and that wears them out. She also says some mechanics don't fully understand automatic slack adjusters on the newest brake systems, and may set them improperly to begin with.

The Vigo County weigh station has the state's only performance-based brake tester, which can calculate the precise amount of braking force. Inspectors elsewhere in the state do a visual check.
