Health Officials Warn Against Amateur Tattoo Artists

(MUNCIE) - The Delaware County Health Department is warning residents about the dangers of amateur tattooing.
Health officials say at least one person recently contracted a staph infection resistant to antibiotics after getting a tattoo from a homeless man in exchange for a place to stay.
The health department has reportedly warned the artist that he could be charged with a crime if he continues to give tattoos outside a permitted parlor without a permit.
The health department can issue a $2,500 fine for each violation. If the man continues to give tattoos, he could be jailed for ignoring a judge's order to stop.
Delaware County Health Department Spokesman Joshua Williams says people can contract hepatitis, HIV/AIDs and other diseases from amateur tattooing.
Tattooing without a permit and doing so outside a permitted parlor are both illegal in Delaware County.
