Farmers Trying To Find Feed For Cattle

(UNDATED) - It’s not just crops that are struggling through Indiana’s hot, dry summer. The weather could take a toll on livestock too.
Hay for cattle has been in shorter supply this year. Even before the summer heat came, an early freeze damaged forage crops.
Indiana Beef Cattle Association executive vice-president Julia Wickard says if there isn't rain soon, cattle farms may have to explore alternatives. She says farmers in the often drought-stricken west sometimes plant turnips after the corn season is over to create additional forage. Farmers could also buy hay from less hard-hit areas.
